NCLB-SPAR

2002-03 School Year

Lake Sybelia strives to be a learning community in which committed educators present a balanced and diversified curriculum in an orderly and inviting environment.  Curriculum, instruction, and assessment are guided by specific and challenging goals, which are aligned from grade to grade.  The academic progress of each student is closely monitored by educators who have a commitment to the students’ continuous improvement.  To ensure high achievement, positive self-esteem, and responsible citizenship, we maximize instructional time, form partnerships within the community, encourage responsible choices, and incorporate instructional discipline.  The effectiveness of this learning community is demonstrated through the achievement, character, and conduct of its students.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Thank you for taking the time to review our first annual NCLB-SPAR report to members of our school community.  We hope that you will enjoy learning more about our school and what we accomplished in the 2002-03 school year.  If you have questions about information included in this report, please contact me or any member of our School Advisory Council (SAC).  The NCLB-SPAR is kept on file in our office and we encourage you to review it any time the school is open.

2002-03 SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN RESULTS

Our School Improvement Plan was developed by our SAC members with input from a wide range of parents, teachers, and community members.  It represented months of study and discussion.  We are very proud of our plan and the dedicated parents and teachers who put the plan together.

The School Improvement Plan helped us focus our attention on areas that parents and teachers told us were important.  The first of our major objectives outlined how we would work together to improve student achievement in reading.  The second objective emphasized improved student achievement in math.  The third objective highlights the plan for improving student achievement in writing.

In 2002-03, Lake Sybelia Elementary accomplished the following annual objectives from our School Improvement Plan:

68% of all students taking the FCAT reading test scored at a Level 3 or above             (Annual Objective EM1)

71% of all students taking the FCAT math test scored at a Level 3 or above                    (Annual Objective EM2)

80% of all students taking the FCAT writing test scored 3.5 or above                    (Annual Objective EM3)

2002-03 SCHOOL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT SURVEY RESULTS

91 percent of our students indicated that Lake Sybelia has a positive school climate and 90 percent said the expectations were high.  Parents told us they liked the expanded use of technology at our school.  Parents told us they felt the school effectiveness was very high.  We hope you continue to feel that way!  Complete learning environment survey results were reported earlier.  Ask at the school office if you would like to see the results.

RESULTS OF EVALUATIONS OF STAFF

One hundred (100) percent of our teachers, administrators, and staff received satisfactory annual evaluations through the district’s assessment system.

2002-03 SAC MEMBERS

Our school advisory council was made up of 17 parents, 2 business/community representatives, 4 teachers, 1 support staff, and 2 administrators.  A majority of the SAC members were not employed at the school.  This group closely represented the racial/ethnic background of our students.  The SAC members were 27 percent black, 61 percent white and 12  percent Hispanic.

LOTTERY DOLLARS

Each school in Orange County received $10 per student from the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund.  This is the money that is the school’s share of revenue from the Florida lottery.  Our total share for the 2002-03 school year was $6,230. Our SAC recommended the expenditure of this total for two purposes:  to support materials for the after school tutoring program and to purchase computers to increase technology availability to our students for instruction.
